Calculate Overall Equipment Effectiveness for your packaging and manufacturing line

Last updated: April 2026

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) measures how well your manufacturing equipment is performing relative to its full potential. An OEE score of 100% means you are manufacturing only good parts, as fast as possible, with no unplanned downtime. Use this free OEE calculator to benchmark your packaging line, identify losses, and track improvements over time.

OEE is the gold standard for measuring manufacturing productivity and is calculated by multiplying three factors: Availability, Performance, and Quality. World-class OEE is considered to be 85% or above.

Enter Your Production Data

Availability

Total scheduled run time for the shift/day

Breakdowns, changeovers, material shortages

Performance

Fastest possible time to produce one unit

All units made during the run (good + defective)

Quality

Rejects, rework, scrap from this run

How Is OEE Calculated?

OEE is the product of three independently calculated metrics:

OEE = Availability x Performance x Quality
  • Availability = (Planned Time โˆ’ Downtime) รท Planned Time ร— 100
  • Performance = (Ideal Cycle Time ร— Total Units) รท Operating Time ร— 100
  • Quality = (Total Units โˆ’ Defective Units) รท Total Units ร— 100

How PTFE Tape Quality Affects Your OEE

On packaging lines, the quality of your PTFE heat seal tape directly impacts all three OEE factors:

  • Availability: Worn or low-quality tape causes unplanned stops for changeovers. Premium tape lasts longer between replacements.
  • Performance: Degraded non-stick properties slow cycle times as operators reduce speed to compensate for sticking.
  • Quality: Inconsistent tape surfaces create weak or uneven seals, increasing reject rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is a manufacturing metric that measures what percentage of planned production time is truly productive. It matters because it provides a single score that captures the three biggest sources of lost productivity: downtime (Availability), slow running (Performance), and defects (Quality).

An OEE score of 85% or above is considered world-class. Most manufacturing operations score between 60-85%. If your score is below 60%, there are significant improvement opportunities. Even small improvements in your lowest-scoring factor can dramatically increase output.

Poor quality PTFE tape on heat sealers causes unplanned downtime for tape changes (reduces Availability), forces slower machine speeds due to sticking (reduces Performance), and creates defective seals that need rework (reduces Quality). Using premium PTFE tape from a quality supplier can improve all three OEE factors simultaneously.
