Packaging Industry Applications

PTFE Solutions for Modern Packaging Machinery

The packaging industry utilizes a wide range of machines to pack items varying in size from small items like torch batteries to large items such as lounge suites, bed mattresses, and rolls of carpet. GORTEF's PTFE products play a crucial role in various packaging applications.

Principal Types of Packaging Machines

  • L Sealers
  • Shrink Wrappers
  • Cryovac Machines
  • Impulse Sealers
  • Blister Packaging Machines
  • Form-Fill-Seal Machines
  • Hot Bar Sealers (For Foil Packaging)
  • Tray Sealing Machines

Manufacturers typically have specific preferences for material grades based on their particular machine requirements. The most common thickness used is 0.135mm TCG005AD, though 0.076mm TCG003AD and 0.250mm TCG010AD are also frequently utilized.

'L' Sealers

L-Sealers are packaging machines designed to wrap products in shrink film efficiently. They are named after the L-shaped sealing bar that cuts and seals the film simultaneously. L-sealers are widely used in various industries, including retail, food, printing, and manufacturing, for protective and aesthetic packaging.

Shrink Wrappers

Often used in conjunction with 'L' Sealers, these machines utilize heat shrinkable film for packaging. PTFE tape prevents film adhesion to the sealing wire. Products are transported on PTFE mesh or closed weave conveyor belts through a shrink wrap oven or tunnel, which features high-temperature resistant silicone coated glass curtains (GORTEF SIL-035) to maintain heat efficiency.

The conveyor belts are manufactured from open mesh PTFE glass fabric (GORTEF 9002 4x4 PTFE GLASS) with 25mm edge reinforcing and a Bullnose join.

Cryovac Machines

A Cryovac machine is a vacuum sealer that removes air from packaging and heat-seals the bag to preserve product freshness, commonly used for food and perishables. During the sealing process, the machine's heated sealing bar melts the bag's edges to create an airtight seal. PTFE (Teflon) tape is applied to the sealing bar to prevent the plastic from sticking and to protect the heating element from direct contact with the bag. This non-stick barrier ensures clean, uniform seals while minimizing wear and tear on the sealing components, helping the machine operate efficiently and extending its lifespan.

Impulse Sealers

An impulse sealer is a heat-sealing machine that uses a heated wire to fuse plastic layers, creating airtight seals. It generates heat only when the sealing arm is pressed down, making it efficient and safe. PTFE (Teflon) tape covers the heating element, providing a non-stick surface to prevent melted plastic from sticking and protects the wire from damage. This ensures smooth, consistent seals and extends the machine's lifespan by preventing residue buildup and wire burnout.

Blister Packaging Machines

Blister packaging machines create individual cavities for products by forming a plastic or aluminum foil blister that is sealed onto a backing card. PTFE tape is applied to the heat-sealing plates to prevent the blister material from sticking, ensuring a clean release and maintaining the precision of each seal. This non-stick surface helps avoid residue build-up and reduces maintenance downtime.

Form-Fill-Seal Machines

Form-Fill-Seal machines automate the process of forming, filling, and sealing packages from a continuous web of film. In these systems, heated sealing jaws are often lined with PTFE tape to create a non-stick interface that ensures a consistent seal while preventing plastic residue from accumulating on the equipment. This application enhances efficiency and helps maintain high-quality packaging.

Hot Bar Sealers (For Foil Packaging)

Hot bar sealers are used for sealing foil pouches, particularly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. These machines utilize heated bars to fuse the edges of the foil material. By applying PTFE tape to the hot bars, manufacturers prevent the foil from sticking and protect the bars from oxidation and wear. This results in cleaner seals and extends the operational life of the sealing equipment.

Tray Sealing Machines

Tray sealing machines are designed to secure food and other products in trays by applying a film over the top and sealing the edges. PTFE tape is used on the heated sealing plates to ensure that the film does not adhere to the plate itself. This non-stick coating guarantees an even distribution of heat, resulting in a secure, tamper-evident seal while reducing the need for frequent cleaning.
